Welcome to Avani African Décor

Hi, I’m Dipti.

How it started… Growing up in London we have access to so much that we take for granted every day. Basics like free medical care & schooling, job opportunities, choice of food from around the world to suit every diet, clean water & most importantly a roof over our head.

At the beginning of 2019, having come back from a trip to Africa, I had a sense of wanting to help others live a better life. But how can I make a difference?

Basket appreciation ~ I always loved the craftsmanship and unique skills that went into creating baskets, passed down from generations to generations with a sense of community. The ladies in my family would always use different baskets at home brought from markets back home in Zimbabwe and Kenya (where my parents are from), I was always surrounded by baskets. Whilst travelling I would want to buy every style and type of basket available!

Baskets are apart of everyday lives in Africa - used for carrying maze, bread and even water. Now these artisans create baskets as a source of income. Avani African Decor was founded to support these women and showcase their traditional craft to the rest of the world, allowing them to become financially independent and to create a better life for their families.

Our values ~ Avani works directly with co-operatives & self-care groups in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Rwanda - no middle man! To support over 400 women from rural areas working towards a better brighter future. Knowing they were treated equally with fair pay, given skill training, support & a sense of community where these women felt safe.

Making a impact ~ Every Avani basket you purchase goes towards these artisans being able to provide food, better living conditions, education and healthcare for their families. I handpicked every basket myself and met the weavers who were so grateful for my order, it made me realise I made the right decision to start Avani African Décor.

Knowing I am directly helping these women live a better life just by selling their baskets to the wider market, gives me a sense of happiness & contentment.

I feel as unique as these baskets - being a British Indian with a African heritage I wanted to represent who I am into the name and logo. ‘Avani’ means Earth in Sanskrit - I loved this as it really reflects what the baskets are made from (Ilala Palm leaves, Wild Grass and Sisal). The logo represents a weave in the basket. I hope you like it as much as I do.

We know our journey at Avani has just started & we wanted to thank you for all your support & being part of the Avani family
